DANIEL ISLAND INFORMATION
1188 Barfield, Charleston SC 29492

Arrival from Charleston Airport

  • catch taxi at the taxi stand outside of baggage claim
  • cost to Daniel Island will be about $25 for two people and will take 20 minutes
  • if the taxi driver is unsure where to go, take 526-E and exit Daniel Island Exit; after exiting, there is an entry with palm trees; you will run into the main street on the island, which is Seven Farms Drive; go past the Family Circle Tennis Center on your left, a fire station on your left, and at the stoplight by the church and day care center (Daniel Island Drive), take a left and proceed one long block (Barfield Drive). On Barfield (this is a cross street but NOT a stop sign), take a left. Barfield will wind around a bit, and our town home will be on the right side of the street, directly across from the Pavilion on the marsh. The town home is yellow with a black door, and two white rocking chairs to greet you on the porch. The garage is behind the house from the alley.

Inside the House

  • If you need to use the heat or the air conditioning, there are two controls (one by the stairs on the first floor, one at the top of the stairs on the second floor); if you need heat, turn up the thermostat; you may also generate extra heat through the gas fireplace; use the top switch on the wall to the right of the fireplace. This will ignite the flames. The pilot light is already on. This is all that is needed for the fireplace... no other controls or switches! Whenever you leave the house, make sure the fireplace is turned off. If you leave the fireplace on too long, it will automatically shut off to prevent overheating. When you leave the house at the end of your stay, turn the thermostat to 60 degrees in winter or the air conditioner to 82 degrees in the summer to control humidity.
  • The car is in the garage (insurance papers in the glove compartment as well as a tire gauge in the front seat coin compartment); the garage door opener is clipped to the sun viser in the car, and the keys to the car are in the kitchen closet in a baggie in a cardboard box with numerous other Charleston maps, tourist information, swimming pass card, etc. The key to open the back door is the same key that is used for the front door. When you leave the house at the end of your stay, please be sure to fill up the car tank with gas, and leave the keys in the box in the kitchen.
  • There is a large television set downstairs. We have basic cable channels. There is also a DVD and VCR in the downstairs television set; if you wish to rent movies, there is a Blockbuster on I-17 South about 15 minutes away OR a Hollywood Video off Long Point Road at the Belle Hall Plaza off 526-E about 8 minutes away from our home (our first choice). Video cards are in the cardboard box in the kitchen with all the other items mentioned so far. We also have TV sets in each bedroom upstairs.
  • There is a washer and dryer upstairs.
  • Please wash your dishes in the dish washer when you leave.
  • Garbage pick up is on FRIDAY; please put your garbage in the can in the garage (or it may be outside by the garage); if you are there on a Friday, wheel the can to the alley in the morning... and after pick up, return the can to the garage empty.

To the Beaches

  • Closest public beaches are Isle of Palms or Sullivan's Island. Both are 15-20 minutes from the house. Our favorite is Sullivan's Island, but both are good.
  • For Isle of Palms, take 526-E and exit 17-N to Georgetown. Proceed on 17-N past the Town Center shopping area (a nice shopping center) and turn right at the Isle of Palms Connector Bridge. Cross the long connector bridge and go straight ahead to the Isle of Palms public beaches. If you wish to go to Sullivan's Island to the beach (highly recommended), simply turn right at the end of the connector bridge and go about 10 more minutes. Sullivan's Island has public access to beaches plus a couple of cute and good beach lunch spots... Poe's, Dunleavy's Pub. Right before getting to Sullivan's Island, there is a wonderful seafood restaurant called The Boathouse... recommended by lots of people and very good! It's also fun to see Wild Dunes Resort which is a full, upscale resort at the Isle of Palms.

To Downtown and Historic Charleston

Take 526-E to 17-S (Savannah, Charleston); follow 17-S through commercial areas in Mt. Pleasant, then cross the large new bridge called the Ravenel Bridge; exit at either Meeting Street or East Bay. Both will take you downtown. This trip takes about 20 minutes

Other Tidbits/Recommendations

  • There are several restaurants right on Daniel Island: Orlando's on Daniel Island Drive for good cheap pizza; Sienna for upscale Italian dining; Soda Water Grill for informal dining, burgers, seafood, etc; Orlando's for pizza
  • Publix is the large supermarket on Daniel Island
  • Great trails for walking/jogging in Daniel Island; check the map in the closet for routes
  • Good restaurant ideas downtown: Anson's, Rue De Jean, Fleets Landing, Mistrals, Sermat, Queen 82, Fig, Tristan, Blossom; Jestine's Kitchen for down-home Southern cooking; actually, you can't go wrong on food in Charleston... lots of good choices
  • Good restaurant ideas in Mt. Pleasant, which is about 10 minutes away. Take 526-E all the way until it ends; it will become Chuck Dawley Blvd.; proceed on Chuck Dawley several miles until it intersects with Coleman Blvd (SC 703). Take a right on Coleman, and you will go past several very good restaurants: J Bistro, Red Drum, The Trawler, Vicory's and our favorite, Water's Edge - which is at Shem Creek before the bridge.
  • If you're interested in a great view and drinks, try the Vendue Inn at the roof top bar in downtown Charleston near the market. Fun on a beautiful evening!
  • Fort Sumter is a great tour; can catch the boat either at the Aquarium downtown or at Patriot's Point in Mt. Pleasant
  • For a rainy day activity, the I-Max Theatre and Aquarium are good choices
  • The plantations just on the outskirts of Charleston are great... Magnolia, Middleton, Boone Hill; lovely flowers, gardens, ante-bellum homes
  • Don't forget the carriage rides and ghost tours in downtown Charleston
  • Great shopping on King Street (both lower and upper)
